Jingdezhen Imperial Kiln Museum
I Have Seen My Country in the Most Outside of Places — Xiao Yue Shan shellyshan.com (Socrates on the Beach)
Shan muses on the convergences and divergences of how history is memorialized and silenced in China and in Italy: "I cannot presume to know anything about Italy or the Italians. In the way of Roland Barthes, the Italy I speak of is the Italy of my mind—a place one goes to think of other places, as I’ve learned that every country one travels to will always be a site of mourning for one’s first country."
Photos to illustrate this excerpt:
In Beijng, the elite and the moneyed have come around to the philosophy of “natural architecture.” Exemplified by the sensitive and sleek predilections of western-educated virtuosos like Zhu Pei, the axioms of this trade focus on achieving a pleasing balance between minimalist, nature-envious forms, and ornate eastern traditions and theatrics. A museum with interlocking compartments of internal courtyards is offset by raw blocks of concrete. A city park sees foliage-covered blocks stacked up against a hollow frame, supposedly inspired by the classic rock gardens of Confucian thought. These buildings are the ultimate indulgence: beautiful and spacious, rich in insinuated antiquity, yet unmistakably contemporary. They pay tribute to the past by underscoring its annihilation. They love history because it is long and far and mutable, and destruction is imprinted in its very conception. It’s the continually tortuous question about the Ship of Theseus—is a machine that has had every single part replaced still the same machine? Except in this case, it isn’t the physical components that have been swapped out; it’s the people. Can we still think about those same old ideas from this completely different time, standing where we are now? ... That is how one survives the brutal questions of country, the hollow plots and gardens of country: you must live in the illusion, all the while knowing what is stirring, right there beneath it, the unthought-of thing boiling on the other side.
The whole essay is lovely and thought-provoking, go read it!
Superficially, there are not many lines that can be drawn between the sprawling vastness of China and the thin curvature of Italy, not landscape nor history nor society’s patterns. Yet there was something undeniably familiar when I first walked through Milan, Naples, and Palermo in my mid-twenties, knitting my body into that frenetic topography—the mothers calling to their daughters from windows, the tapering streets marking their old labyrinthian logic, the vocal antics of everything alive, the heaviness of monuments, the bluntness that was really a front for what one could not or would not say, the intimacies of meal-sharing, the overbearing infrastructures of power both visible and invisible, and always, the celebration of spectacle. But beyond those common notes, beyond the comparisons of which I am certainly an insufficient measurer, the definitive quality by which these two countries coalesced in my mind was that, within their boundaries, there reigned a fierce, opulent pride. Ill-defined and in infinitely various costume, pride did not always take on the form of superiority or self-worth, but it certified that the idea of country would always pervade its people’s minds, that one could hold onto the solid fact of country and know it as immovable. It was this sense of not loving or hating your nation, but being inextricable from it, that raised the mirror between these two dazzling arenas. This, and the fact that this pride ruled alongside another monarch, equally as omnipotent but much less discernible—and that figure was silence.

Stamped Concrete Adds Value to Your Home
Stamped Concrete Adds Value to Your Home https://concretegeelong.wordpress.com/2024/05/27/stamped-concrete-adds-value-to-your-home/ Stamped concrete is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to traditional brushed or exposed aggregate concrete. It’s less expensive than pavers and offers the look of natural stone, tile or wood. SUNDEK’s stamped concrete overlays can be molded into the look of flagstone, slate, tile, custom slate and wood. Read on to learn more about concrete stamping near me, and how it compares to other paving materials. Curb Appeal Whether you’re installing a new driveway, patio, pool deck or walkway, decorative concrete adds value to your home by improving its appearance. Often called textured or imprinted concrete, it can take the form of patterns that mimic slate, flagstone, tile, brick or wood. If you’re worried about the cost of stamped concrete, there are ways to keep it budget-friendly. Consider a simple, one-color scheme to stay within your price range. Or, try a patterned border to frame your concrete and make it look finished without going overboard. Another way to save on cost is to extend the same pattern throughout your project. For example, if you have a patterned concrete patio, continue it onto the walkways and steps of your house. A reputable custom concrete contractor, such as Construction Repair NYC, can do this with ease. The result is a cohesive look that’s sure to impress. Durability Stamped concrete is a durable alternative to materials like bricks, stones and tiles. It can mimic their look and feel at a fraction of the cost, making it a great option for budget-conscious homeowners. If you choose a contractor with experience, they will know how to lay the concrete properly and use a high-quality sealer to preserve its appearance. A good sealer will prevent stains, protect against mold and mildew, and help the surface resist wear and tear. It also requires less maintenance than other paving materials. Regular sweeping and occasional washing with a pressure washer will keep dirt from building up and staining the concrete. For exterior surfaces, consider using sand instead of salt to melt snow and ice and avoid eroding the concrete. This will also eliminate tripping hazards, which can be dangerous for people with mobility issues. Resale Value A stamped concrete patio, walkway, driveway or entryway is an attractive investment that adds value to your home. The initial cost is comparable to pavers but unlike pavers, stamped concrete lasts longer and requires less maintenance. It also stands up to weather, traffic and wear better than other paving materials. Your concrete stamping professional can create designs that imitate other floor surfaces, such as slate, flagstone, tile, brick or wood. The color and texture can also be customized for a unique look that complements your landscaping and architecture. Enter your zip to get matched with top-rated pros in your area. The Angi rating is based on verified reviews from homeowners like you who hired these contractors. Maintenance While concrete is known to be more durable than asphalt or pavers, it still needs some maintenance. This is especially true for exterior surfaces that are subject to freeze/thaw cycles and damage from de-icing salts. To avoid these issues, try to park vehicles further away from the surface and be mindful of snow removal – avoiding metal blades and using less salt are the best ways to minimize the impact on your stamped concrete. For interior surfaces, sweeping and regular mopping will help prevent dirt buildup and keep your concrete looking good. You’ll also want to consider resealing your concrete on a regular basis. A quality concrete sealer will extend the life of your surface, and can be easily applied by a concrete contractor. Offering an annual maintenance program on your concrete work is a great way to get repeat business and increase revenue. via Total Concrete Geelong https://concretegeelong.wordpress.com May 27, 2024 at 06:32PM

Types of Decorative Concrete
Tumblr media
Concrete is a common construction material that can be used in a number of ways. It is often known for its strength and durability, but it can also be decorative.
A variety of techniques can be used to decorate concrete, including acid stains, acrylic stains, concrete dyes and integral colors (color mixed into the concrete before it is poured). Other methods include scoring, etching, chiseling, and polishing.
Pattern Imprinted Concrete
Often called ‘stamp’ or ‘textured concrete’, pattern imprinted concrete is a modern attractive paving method for patios, paths and driveways. It uses a range of pattern mats that imitate different types of stone, slate and cobble. This, combined with a choice of dyes, can give the impression of block, natural stone and flagstone paved surfaces.
Unlike tarmac which looks quite industrial and offers very little in terms of design, an imprinted concrete patio, path or driveway can create a more bespoke look to your property. Moreover, it doesn’t crack as easily in hot and cold weather.
Once the concrete is set it is then colour and printed with a variety of different designs. It’s very important that the colour is laid consistently to avoid a patchy finish. This is especially true if the job requires several concrete deliveries and a colour surface hardener. Once the concrete is cured it’s then sealed with a high-quality sealer that protects against stains, spillages and UV light fading.
Ashlar Stone
Ashlar is a type of finely dressed stone masonry. It can refer to either a single stone that has been worked until it is squared or masonry built from such stones. It may be coursed or stacked, creating continuous vertical joints, or random with discontinuous horizontal and vertical joints.
It is most commonly used in paving and walling projects. It can be finished in a variety of ways, including dry ashlar where all sides are precision-cut with a rough surface. This style was used in the ancient palaces of Knossos and Phaistos.
Another finish for ashlar is quarry faced. In this style, the visible faces of the stones are left natural, displaying their rock-faced texture. The beds and sides of the stones are carefully chiseled to create thin joints. This finish is a great option for areas that need a little extra grip. It is also possible to add exposed aggregate in this pattern. This gives the concrete a more rustic and natural look.
Herringbone
Herringbone is a distinctive weave pattern, sometimes known as “broken twill.” It’s similar to chevron, but differs in that herringbone uses rectangles that are straight across the width of the fabric, while chevron’s corners use angles that are less than ninety degrees.
Herringbone patterns can be seen in a variety of textiles, including tweed cloth. It’s also a common design element in flooring and parquetry, where rows of wood are staggered to create a zigzag pattern.
This elegant and versatile pattern is popping up in flooring, kitchen backsplashes, and other surfaces that can bring interest and energy to a room. When used on a large scale, herringbone can be bold and striking. However, on a smaller scale herringbone can look very subtle and read as solid from a distance. It’s a timeless, classic design option that can be incorporated into any design style. It’s an ideal choice for a kitchen backsplash, but can also accentuate the lines of mid-century modern furniture or complement reclaimed barn wood to create a rustic-chic dining table.
Cobblestone
Cobblestones are beautiful, and they instantly conjure images of winding lanes in misty villages. However, they’re tricky to walk on and a common cause of twisted ankles. They were also one of the first paving materials to be used in streets. Cobblestones are rounded stones, larger than pebbles and smaller than boulders, that were gathered from stream beds and mortared in place. Eventually cobblestones were replaced by quarried granite setts (also known as Belgian blocks), which are more uniform in size and can be installed without mortar.
In addition to being used in roads, reclaimed cobblestones are frequently found in historic buildings, including homes, stores, restaurants, stagecoach taverns and factories. The tumbling action of glaciers during the last Ice Age made abundant supplies of these small, rounded stones available in places like the Finger Lakes region of New York. These cobblestones were used to build many of the towns, villages and cities in this region of the US prior to the Civil War.

- The dominion of the beasts and the forces of nature:
Thus, during shamanic ceremonies, rituals were performed whose main purpose was to demonstrate mastery of the beasts and forces of nature. Thus, the consumption of psychoactive substances - which they did not call 'medicine' - was perhaps given to an initiate or a sick person as a tool for the recruitment and control of the attendees, as well as a source of the activities of the tribesmen.
In some cases, these substances were used as therapy, initiating traditional medicine, facilitating mental manipulation and making users more vulnerable to their ailments and discomforts. Although we lack a genetic study to determine whether it was ayahuasca, snuff, hallucinogenic mushrooms or San Pedro, but the probability that it was marijuana is the most approximate.
So everything that happened, thought, said or lived by the Shaman, throughout his existence is recorded in an "archive". So: -How can we access through the reading of that Record?
The Records in the Shaman's memory are a dimension of consciousness that holds the imprint of the journey through both material and immaterial space-time. It is perhaps conceived as the "archive of Life" and is probably what allows us to access present, past and future knowledge of all things.
The reading of the Record in the Shaman's memory through an "altered state of consciousness" is intended to access the -temporal shift in the overall pattern of subjective experience-, so that the memory archive of the planes seeks higher frequencies.
In these frequencies, the evolutionary activities of all beings who have inhabited the Earth are recorded, where there is a record of their energy. Since the mental plane is the highest dimension, the Shaman needs to enter through a catalyst into the Record viewer. Once the substance accesses through his bloodstream, he receives the necessary information from higher planes to guide him as to the most propitious path to take in all the paths of his life.
This basic form of Alchemy is a physical space in this dimension, an energetic density, with no measure of time bounded by the evolution of the Hominids. Here, it is the space of who dominates substance, - there is no yesterday or today - it is a single place, in a leap into the future where the archives containing the history of all existence are kept, where all beings have their record. The archive of the Hominids is individual, the archive of plants, animals and minerals is group.
When the Shaman, by means of the substance he administers to the "Lesser Hominid", allows him to obtain concrete information on the vibration of the subject, through the dates marked by the lunar cycles since his birth. Thus, it allows him to understand in a deeper way the reasons for the dark areas of his personality, such as fear. How does the shaman transform the essential forces of nature in the subject to defeat the fear of the other beasts?
Shamans over the centuries have archived everything they have experienced thanks to plants containing DMT, the psychotropic substance responsible for their visions and hallucinations. This neuroreceptor is related to the REM sleep phase, and could also be behind some cases of sexual domination.

What Is Stamped Concrete | Stamped Concrete Process | Stamped Concrete Cost
Tumblr media
What Is Stamped Concrete?
Tumblr media
Stamped Concrete When the concrete top surface is decorated with different patterns, shapes, colors, etc. then it is called stamped concrete. Stamped concrete is very popular in western countries like the United States, the UK, Canada, etc. It is mostly used to decorate the floor in patios, car porches, driveways, and sidewalks. Decorating concrete with stamps not only adds strength to the floors but also provides a pleasing appearance. This is a very good and effective idea for low-cost landscaping where costly granites, interlocking paver blocks, and patios involve high costs. This type of concrete is also known as textured concrete or imprinted concrete. Stamped concrete after stamping looks similar to stones such as slates or flagstones, brick, tile, or with good quality control they can also look like wood. Stamped concrete is the best choice for decorating the pool decks, courtyards, and entries of the residential building. It is also the best choice for house outdoor paving. Read More: Pervious Concrete – Its Application & Advantages
Stamped Concrete Process
Following steps to be followed to make stamped concrete, 1. Base Preparation
Tumblr media
Stamped Concrete Base Preparation The first step of the stamped concrete process is to prepare a base for concrete laying. This whole area is cleaned such that no impurities are left on the ground where the concrete is placed. Then compacting the base properly with the rammer, will increase the strength of the base and reduce changes in soil settlement below the concrete. 2. Placing Formwork for Concrete
Tumblr media
Stamped Concrete Formwork Place the formwork on the base according to slab dimension accurately. Formworks are generally made of wood or plastic. Check that forms are properly fixed in place and assure that they will not get lost during concrete pouring. 3. Reinforcement Arrangement
Tumblr media
Stamped Concrete Reinforcement Reinforcement is essential to install in any concrete member which has to take some load, wear and tear. Reinforcement is made of steel or wire mesh can be used.  The reason behind adding reinforcement in a concrete slab is to control cracking, provide structural capacity, increase impact resistance, and reduce joint maintenance. Read More: Concrete Driveway Cost and Types With Application 4. Placing of Concrete and Finishing Concrete is made by two methods either machine mixing on-site or ready mix concrete plant. If concrete is made on site it should be properly mixed in the machine to form a homogeneous mix. Ready-mix concrete is made by the control method in the plant its quality is good compared to site-mix concrete.
Tumblr media
Stamped Concrete Placement Concrete must be disposed to close to formwork because if it is dumped from height there are changes of segregation in concrete which is a sign of bad concrete. To protect adjacent buildings plastic sheets can be used to cover them or other existing slabs from concrete splatter. Types and grades of concrete also play an important role. As the poring work is completed finishing work should start. Give a proper level and smooth finish to the top surface of the concrete. 5. Apply Color Hardener
Tumblr media
Applying Color Hardener for Stamped Concrete In the stamped concrete process, first, the color hardener is applied on the surface as concrete is reached the required plasticity. The Color hardener is thrown on the top surface of the concrete such that it spread over a large area evenly. After the first layer of color hardener has been applied to the surface, allow it at least 10 min to absorb water from the concrete and then apply float on the surface. As floating is done properly do the second layer of color hardener and repeat the above steps. 6. Apply Release Agent
Tumblr media
Applying Release Agent A powered release agent is used in stamped concrete to serve two main purposes: Firstly, they impart fine-textured color to the concrete surface and act as a bond breaker to prevent the stamping mats or skins from sticking to the concrete and disturbing the imprint texture. It is suggested to use a Tampico brush about 8 inches wide to apply the release agent. Read More: 8 Signs Of Bad Concrete Pour & Defects In Concrete 7. Check Concrete Plasticity Before starting stamping work it is essential to check plasticity of the concrete has reached the right stage or not. If stamping is started too early, the concrete may not have sufficient strength to carry the weight of workers or hold a well-defined imprint. If the stamping is started too late, then stamping work will require more effort, you'll produce little or no texture with the stamps, especially as you reach the end of the job. 8. Start Placing Stamps on Concrete Surface
Tumblr media
Stamping Process Now, we have to start the stamped concrete process. Take the form or mold of the stamp and place them on the concrete surface. After placing it apply the required pressure on it so that it imparts its inner shape on the concrete surface. Always start stamping from one side to another to avoid any mismatch between them. 9. Clean Stamped Surface and Apply Curing Compound Now remove excessive release agents and dust from the concrete surface and stamped joints. Then after applying the curing compound on the surface. As the concrete surface is sufficiently cleaned and allowed to dry. 10. Install Joints
Tumblr media
Stamped Concrete Joint Installation Cutting contraction joints is essential to install concrete at proper depth and spacing in the slab soon after placement. This joint provides stress relief at required locations and prevents uncontrolled random cracking. We can also start cutting the joint as concrete starts to set by a groove or you can wait to cut the joint until after the concrete has been set using a saw equipped with a diamond or abrasive blade. In the stamped concrete process a sawed joint is less noticeable than grooving. 11. Final Finishing Once the concrete surface is sufficiently cured then apply a finish coat of sealer. Most of the stamped concrete contractors recommend applying sealer several weeks later, after a light surface cleaning. But take care not to apply sealer too heavily, which could trap moisture in the slab. The best practice for sealer application is to combine both spraying and rolling, especially when the stamped pattern has deep grout lines.

DIY Stamped Concrete Process Tips
- If you are trying to utilize a new pattern of stamped then it is advisable to first use it on compacted sand to see its pattern clarity. - Always try to avoid stamped pattern repetition, especially for patterns that mimic natural materials such as stone or slate. The random stamped pattern looks more real and attractive. - For better results you can precoat, your stamp mats with some of the release agents. This will create extra bond-breaking to help ensure a clean imprint. - To create the random antiquing effect, apply a very little amount of powdered release to the surface of the concrete and then spray the liquid release over the top of it. - Always be sure that the release agent gets well-compressed into the concrete by the stamp. Otherwise, it will simply wash off the concrete surface without leaving the desired color.

đŸŒč
since i receive a rose, i'm to share an excerpt of one of my many WIP's. it's untitled and i haven't had the muse to continue it, so yeah. it's a medstudent!Stephen Strange fic, btw ;)
His eyes. The very first thing you noticed about him, were his eyes. Glacial. Steely. Closed off from the world. The very window to his soul, shut off, hidden from the world. It was translucent, you could almost see the old and cold library lights reflect in his eyes.
The very first time you ever laid eyes on him was on your second year of medicine. You were browsing in the anatomical sciences section of the medical library, looking for a specific book. You pulled the 14th book in the shelf, hoping it would be the book you were looking for, alas, it was not. You read the cover and skimmed some of the first few pages, thinking if you should just stick to reading it and use it as your reference rather than spend the whole night looking for it.
But something in you clicked; you have the whole night to look for the book. No one’s waiting for you at home and the cold bed wasn’t appealing to you at that moment. A quiet sigh escaped your lips as you pushed back the book into the shelf. You grabbed the next book, but before you could check the title, you saw him.
You saw his eyes.
You saw him through the small space created by the books that left the shelf. You saw him standing across you, separated by the mahogany bookshelf full of anatomical references. It was an exceptionally short moment; it was imprinted in your mind. Maybe it was because of the way he looked at you. Glaringly icy yet enchanting. Steely and safe. As if his stare alone was enough for you to send you screaming for the hills. Nonetheless, you stood your ground, feet planted against the concrete. Frozen in shock, stuck feeling an uncertain emotion.
You snapped back into reality when the empty spade of the other side of the shelf was full again; the book was back. You lightly shook your head, the fear of never seeing him again crept on you, it made you feel uneasy. You were never going to see him again.
The very next day he was your laboratory partner.
“I’m Y/N.” your usual cheery self said. He slowly turned and looked at your proffered hand. He shook it, briefly grasping your small hand into his.
“My name is Stephen.” he said, and your ears suddenly pricked up, surprised to hear how deep his voice was.
It was such a nice feeling to put a name on a face, and for the whole day you were reeling. Silently thanking the gods out there, and the almighty fate himself for giving you a chance to meet him.
The next thing you noticed about him, were his hands. They were long, and elegant. And utterly skilled. You could watch him for hours slice up a cadaver’s skin flawlessly. As if his hands were made for it. He moved so meticulously, so beautifully.
“Did you drink coffee today?” he asked one time during a laboratory session.
“Uh yeah.” you replied with a small smile.
“I’ll give you a tip, Y/N. Don’t drink coffee on the day of your major anatomy exam.” you felt him before you heard his words. He stood close beside you and his hand flew up to your side, lightly touching your forearm, before holding your left hand with his.
“Relax.” he breathed into your ear and you had trouble doing what he said so.
“I’m trying.” you sighed.
“Am I making you more nervous?”
“Kinda
”
“Okay.” he chuckled. Instead of moving away from you, his other hand held your right hand.
His hands were warm, a great contrast to cold lights, tiles and almost morgue-esque environment of your laboratory classroom. You could feel him behind you; the steady pattern of his breathing, the even beating of his heart. You started to relax in his presence, within the close distance between of your bodies.
“Now, let’s get the scalpel.” he said, guiding your shaky hands to grab the said instrument. Scalpel in your hand, Stephen carefully helped you slice the skin of the cadaver, cutting a straight line. He slowly let go of your hand that had stopped shaking in his warm grasp.
“You see? Caffeine makes your heartbeat erratic, quicker blood flow, shaky muscle movement.” he said monotonously.
“I clearly forgot that. I’m functioning on four hours of sleep and coffee seemed to do the trick.”
“I don’t think so.” he smirked at you and leant back against the tiled table.
“Thank you, for whatever you did.” you said and looked up at him, and gave him a smile.
“You’re welcome.”
“Say, do you do that to all your lab partners when they get nervous?” you teased him.
“No. Only you.” he replied, a smile forming on his lips and you saw his dimple. You gaped at him and his smile became full blown, clearly, he was enjoying the banter.
“It was completely experimental, Y/N. Just wondered if it’ll work. Oh, and I wondered what your hands would feel like against mine.”
“You flirt!” you gasped. A laugh bubbled up from your throat and soon, the two of you were laughing.
“You like it anyway.” Stephen replied, and gave you a wink.
You did, and you do.
It was the start of something new, something exciting.

How a Concrete Worker in Newcastle, ON Can Transform Your Home
Tumblr media
Whether you want to install a concrete driveway or a patio, you need the help of a professional. Find a trusted stone, paver and concrete contractor in Newcastle, ON on Houzz. Browse photos, read reviews and get matched with professionals that can tailor their services to your project.
Local concreters are committed to quality craft, professionalism and excellent customer service. They provide a wide range of residential and commercial concrete solutions, including driveways, patios, sidewalks and retaining walls.
Driveways
A new concrete driveway can transform your home and add value. It is more cost efficient than a gravel or brick driveway and can be constructed to your specifications. Concrete is also very durable and does not shift or sink like gravel. It can withstand heavy traffic and even hold car tyres without rutting. It is also easy to maintain – just brush or hose.
A concrete contractor can build a new driveway, resurface an existing one, or repair cracks. They can also lay concrete paths, construct patios and slabs, and provide concrete finishing services. These contractors can be found by asking for referrals or by searching online.
The most popular choice for a driveway is exposed aggregate concrete, which is available in a variety of colours and textures to suit your house and landscape. You can choose from a range of grey tones for a modern look, or darker coloured aggregates for a more traditional appeal.
Patios
Adding a patio to your home creates an outdoor living space for entertaining and relaxing. It is also a low-maintenance residential structure that can add value to your property.
A concrete contractor can help you design and install a new paved area that connects your indoor living space with the outdoors. They can also help you choose the right paving materials and colours to match your home’s style.
Pattern imprinted concrete is a popular choice for patios because it offers a wide range of patterns that mimic different types of stonework. It is easier to maintain than other high-cost paving options, such as paved brick or natural stone.
Search for a local concrete contractor on Oneflare to find and hire the professional that fits your needs. Review profiles, photos, and work history to get recommendations and estimates from top-rated professionals in your area. Easily compare quotes and hire a pro quickly.
Sidewalks
Concrete sidewalks are often preferred over asphalt because they are able to withstand heavier traffic, and can easily be repaired with grinding or cutting, or even mudjacking. In addition, sidewalks made of concrete stay relatively cooler in the hottest Newcastle summer months, as opposed to asphalt, which tends to absorb the sun’s heat and increase in temperature.
When constructing sidewalks, a minimum of two inches of granular material shall be compacted in place as a base for the concrete. The surface of all sidewalks shall have a cross slope not to exceed 2 percent and be directed toward the street, and longitudinal grades shall be a maximum of 5 percent. Where the sidewalk abuts a building, driveway or other special structures, contraction joints shall be provided at intervals determined by the engineer. These joints shall be formed by the use of pre-molded strips of bitumen filled fiber placed at right angles to the centerline and perpendicular to the top surface of the sidewalk.
Retaining Walls
Retaining walls are designed to help hold back soil in a garden, backyard, or sloped landscape. They are built to last and can increase your home’s value. They also help make a sloped yard usable by leveling it. Retaining walls can be built using different materials, including poured concrete and wood.
A professional can build a new retaining wall or repair an existing one. They will prepare the site, build the wall, and install any necessary drainage systems. They will also ensure that the wall is safe and stable.
Look for a local contractor that is certified by a professional association and has the required insurance. This will protect you from any damage that might occur while the work is being done. Then, request quotes from multiple contractors to compare prices and services. Choose the best one based on your budget and needs. A professional will give you an accurate quote based on your specifications.

Only the Moon and the Stars Know
NOTE: Hello all, I thought I would take a crack at another fic in order to help us all get through the 3 weeks till a new SVU. This one can correlate to the previous fic I wrote last week “Peace in the Midst of the Storm.” I was listening to Sia’s “My Love” and the images just came flooding in. So I again neglected my homework in order to dream up a beautiful E/O moment. I also drew inspiration from the beautiful super moon we had recently. I hope you enjoy your moon dance :). I have never posted on fic sites before but if someone wants to review my work for mistakes I am fine with it being posted elsewhere as long as my name is attached. Forgive any mistakes missed.
As always I own nothing, Elliot and Olivia belong to Dick Wolf and NBC. This is E/O centered based on what I hope we see at Fins wedding. A girl can hope for a kiss right? Or is a kiss and a dance too much to ask for ;). Heres the link to Sia’s masterpiece:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWyOPaTWXOw
Rated: PG
The night was cool but warmth hung gently in the air, inviting. In the darkness the moon dazzled in all its glory, flashes of brilliant whites and peeking through a conspicuous gentle hint of pink. Not a cloud in site, the vastness going on into eternity. Like a pearl, a precious rare stone being found in the darkness
 In its brilliance
being seen for the first time. The stars each twinkled in their individual radiance but almost appearing to step back in awe
allowing the moon its moment. In the backdrop the waves ungulated, mesmerizing, as each wave sparkled in the magnificent miraculous light of the heavenly bodies above.
Liv looked up, eyes wide taking in the breathtaking beauty of it, the gothic magical stillness. Their light shimmering in the pools of her twin deep golden iris’. She held her beath feeling like any slight noise would interrupt the peace settling all around her. Holding every inch of her near. She took a deep breath closing her eyes to preserve the moment in the recesses of her mind. As if it was a painting lovingly created just for her eyes to see. How long had it been, could she even remember a time she felt
 relief, peace, lightness
Hope. The last few months had been filled with turmoil and yet laced with healing honesty and promise. With all the sorrow and evil heaviness she had endured and seen, every millisecond of peace was like the first breath taken in too long. It filled her lungs and trickled warm life through her whole being.
When she was a child the only hope in the darkness was the dream of finding a place to belong
 a home
a family. The hope that she was not just created for one thing, brokenness. Over time as age crept in she had learned that many precious lights in this world wandered this journey alone. That was just reality. If you were incredibly lucky you found one, one soul wondering
who was willing to see you for the reality
stripping away the exterior to see the awesome jewel you are within
 they will fight
 they will claw
they will love deeply if it meant they could remain near. Suffocating sorrow, pain, and loss are of the wisest of teachers. They remove the scales covering our sight, allowing us to see the smallest of moments like a precious work of art. Breathe
 in and out
. In and out
.
The music behind brought Liv back to reality. Their ascending notes only highlighting the sight before her. To most eyes Fin’s wedding would not be seen as a fairy tale spectacle but to those who knew and loved him, it fit them perfectly. A smile graced her face, she was happy for them. They had found one another, grasping on, among the thrashing waves of life. One of the lucky ones.
In a moment she felt a shift in the atmosphere around her. Time slowed... There was a gravitational pull coming near. Without turning around she knew the only soul who possessed that sway over her being. She felt his presence fall into her orbit, had he always fit there so perfectly? His warm heavy breath fanned the back of her neck.
“Liv
.” That voice had both haunted her dreams and healed wounds. Had he always been her destiny? Had her waging war not been in vain? Had all those moments led up to this
prepared that scared broken little girl for this very moment in time? Had the moon and stars stopped for the honor of viewing one life collide with another? Exploding within the nebula of space, creating life.
She felt his hand lightly brush against hers igniting electricity causing ever hair to stand on end.  Liv turned around. Those eyes had her, held her. In them she saw 22 years-worth of fight, struggle, desperate love and loyalty. His eyes searched her face, read her eyes. A slight glittering smile reached his eyes before they passed the massage to his mouth.  For a few moments there was silence, he took her in
imprinting this woman, he has longed for, for longer than he could recall anymore. Being away from her for 12 years had just made them all the more difficult to ignore.
“You look”
. Words seem to utterly escape him
“Beautiful.” He knew this woman before him- he knew her demons, her fears, her hopes, her strength, her wounds, her beauty- but in that moment, he felt he was seeing her clearly for the first time. Why had he allowed so much time to be lost?
Liv broke the pull of his eyes and her head fell. Hair cascading down around her like a protective shell. Had she ever felt more vulnerable? “Thank you.”
There was so much he wanted
needed to say. So many feelings and too few words. So in the moment he did the only thing that made sense. Elliot ran his hand down her arm- leaving a trail of fire in the wake of his touch- till it slid perfectly into the mold of her hand. She looked up at him, pulling her in deeper. He had her, there was no escape.
“Dance with me Liv.” Elliot guided her outside of the tent and away from prying eyes.
He looked down seeing where the concrete stopped and the sand began. A smile crept across Elliot’s face, his feet moved and he kicked off the shoes he took out of his closet once a year, pulled off his socks with them. Liv looked over at his discarded shoes, amused
she stepped out of her own. With her hand still in his they walked onto the shifting surface. Liv stopped for a moment wiggling her toes deeper into the warm grains. There was something about the beach that brough out the child in everyone. Amazed that each grain of sand at one time was a part of something living.  Liv looked up at Elliot with a smile.
“It’s nice to see that you know
” She looked at him confused
“A smile.” Without giving her a chance to think he guided her closer to the waves. Liv’s feet sunk into the sand and for an instant she lost her footing. Instinctively Elliot caught her. A laugh erupted from Liv.
“Well, we know one thing that hasn’t changed.” She smacked the side of his arm.
“If you get me wet Elliot Stabler I swear to God I am not above using defensive maneuvers and you will be going home with a wet suit.” Liv had a glint in her eyes, one he had seen so many times before. He smiled, pretending not to be amusing, “We will just have to see about that now won’t we.” They slid back into old patterns with such ease as if no time had transpired between them. In that moment he finally realized just how much he needed all of this back. He had missed his best friend.
They both stopped for a moment, taking in the dazzling display before them. Waves crashing in and then retreating in a delicate dance.
“Have you ever seen anything like it?” She squeezed his hand. “Actually, this is all Noah has been talking about for the last month. He is at a friend’s house tonight. They have a telescope and planned a party around the “Super Pink Moon Event of the Century.” She laughed. “Last time I checked my phone I have already gotten about 40 pictures of the moon via text message from every angle possible, they are even convinced they may have seen a UFO.”
At that Elliot laughed, “You’re kidding me?” Liv smiled and shook her head, “Nope.”
With that a long silence hung between them again neither one of them acknowledging that their hands were still intertwined, like they were afraid if they lost contact the other would simply drift out into the vastness of space. Elliot signed, looking down at their connection. He pulled a little to get her attention. She looked at him with a smile, “You can barely hear the music from here.” Elliot looked over at the tent in the distance. “I think we will do just fine, besides the waves are giving off their own beat and I’d take that over music any day of the week.”
With that said she stepping into his embrace. One hand in his the other coming up to cup the back of his neck. His free hand sliding gently onto the curve of her side. Their eye contact never wavering. For a minute they both just stood there, reveling in just how good it felt to be near one another. Slowly Elliot began to move in rhythmic circles, pulling her with him. Soon it became clear that more contact was needed, wanted. He pulled her closer as her other hand came up around his neck. Both of Elliot’s hand snaked around her waist pulling her more firmly to him. He longed to be as close as he could get. Liv’s head dropped to his shoulder. Breathing him in deeply. Had she forgotten how safe it felt here? For what felt like an eternity they swayed
moved against each other, reveling in the sensation of loving and being loved. The soft cadence of the waves their only music.
Elliot nuzzled into the side of her head and whispered gently into her ear, “I meant what I said the other night you know, at the intervention.” With that Liv stopped moving, she pulled her head away just enough to look into his eyes. So close that their breath had become intermingled. “It may not have come out the way I had hoped, or when, but I meant every word Liv.” With that said Liv’s emotions caused her chin to move of its own accord and tears began to well up in her eyes. She closed her them, freeing the tears that had been pooling there. Liv rested her forehead against his, letting out a trembling breath. For a long moment they just stood there
listening to the rhythmic pattern of the waves and their own breathing.
When Liv felt her emotions wrangle themselves in, she said
 “I know you did.”
Elliot pulled her into an embrace, squeezing her tightly to himself. “Let’s get you home, huh?” With a sigh she broke free of his secure embrace instantly missing the protective cocoon he had created around her. He looked down at her for a moment, and reached up to stroke a piece of errant hair behind her ear.
“Did you drive here?” She asked with an unsteady voice.
“No, I took an uber. I figured you wouldn’t mind me hitching a ride back with you.” Elliot smiled.
“Well, I can’t promise I won’t charge you for the gas and the milage, or make you listen to some ridiculously cheesy music.” Liv grinned easing the tension that lingered.
“I guess Ill take my chances, if all else fails I can always jump ship and walk home.”
With that they both laughed. They walked hand in hand to her car parked to the far end of the event tent. Unwilling to lose the last remaining connection between them.
The ride home was uneventful. Liv did her best to keep her thoughts in line. There was a part of her that wanted to reciprocate his feelings and the other part that was simply unsure. Feeling she had tried for years to bury. There was still so much to work through. In the corners of her mind was a small pang of guilt, it had only been 6 months since Kathy’s death. Could she trust his emotions? There was also a part of Liv that wanted to protect herself as she knew deep down she could not endure losing him again and come out the other end
 sane.
The car pulled to a stop outside of Elliot’s apartment. A silent tension hung in the air between them. “Would you walk with me a bit before you go?”
She was tired, but the other part of her simply longed for his presence. “Sure, I guess I can do that.”
They silently walked along the sidewalks of New York, the city that never slept no matter how late. “Your quiet, I wish you would tell me what your thinking Liv.”
With a sigh she contemplated her next words carefully. Did she have the strength to be honest or was it best to do what they did best, hide and avoid.
“Look Elliot, there has been so much at once I can’t keep my head on straight. A lot
 happened when you were gone.”
He looked at her with tormented hooded eyes. “Fin
shared with me some of it but he wanted to let you share your own experiences.” Elliot shook his head, tears briming.  “I am sorry Liv. I can’t promise you, if I had been here, I would not have killed that son of a bitch for what he did to you.  But that doesn’t mean I don’t regret the fact I wasn’t here.”
Liv sighed and shook her head
“Elliot, I need you to hear me. My life is not your responsibility, of all the things I learned from this that is one of them. And I think I understand better why you felt you needed to leave, but that doesn’t change my experience of it. Of who you were in my life. Somehow
my whole life and existence had become wrapped up in you. You were my partner, my family, my best friend. I couldn’t remember a time in my life without you in it. I had to learn to live a different way without that
without you. Then you come back and your emotions are all over the place. I don’t know if I can trust them or you. Or even trust myself
” There was a silent pause.
“You just lost your wife Elliot. I just don’t know what to do with all of this. It’s not that I don’t
 have feelings
I just don’t know if I can even trust them right now.”
Elliot was silent for along moment, wanting to get his words right. He could see his apartment coming back into view, somehow they had already made their way back.
“You’re right Liv.”
They both stopped at the front door of his apartment building. Elliot reached out and pulled Olivia into his embrace.
“Listen to me Liv, I am all over the place and you have every right to question me but that doesn’t mean the things I have felt have not been there between us for a long time. They didn’t just spring up out of nowhere. With all of this, it has just made it more glaringly obvious I
we have not been honest with each other. Look
”
Elliot pulled slightly away and his finger came up to slowly lift her chin. Her eyes locked with his.
“I don’t expect anything from you Liv. If you want space I’ll give you space. I just want a chance to make this right.”
With that said Liv’s chin again quivered. “I don’t want space Elliot.”
“Then what do you want?”
She looked up at him, reading his face, unsure how to articulate the balled-up mass of emotions and thoughts.
“I just want to know this is real, that you will get some help, that you won’t disappear again. I can’t continue on this roller-coaster.”
Elliot shook his head, “I hear you Liv.”
He pulled her into his arms again and she clung on desperately. Within a part of herself was this sense of shame, like some of the work she had done over the last 12 years was being quickly undone. While the rest of her felt she was finally home again.
Liv pulled away
allowing her forehead to find its way to his, if only to remain close for a bit longer.
In a voice above a whisper, she said
 “I love you to.”
Elliot pulled his head from hers. Looking deeply into those dark brown eyes. Olivia’s hand gently stroked his cheek of their own accord.
He looked down to her lips and then back to those eyes again. She did not move; she did not pull away. Elliot leaned in slowly, allowing his nose to stroke the side of her own. Her breath fanned hot against his face. Liv’s mouth opened slightly but she did not move, she simply waited. Elliot’s mouth delicately caressed the softness of her top lip. Liv’s eyes shut involuntarily at the sensations of his mouth on her own. He stepped closer into her allowing his mouth to conform more fully to hers, the slightest of pressure. Liv angled here head to allow for more contact, grasping at the back of his neck. Before she knew it, he was pulling away when all she wanted was
 more of him.
His sight rested on hers. The look in his eyes all too familiar took on a new and profound meaning. With hooded eyes she blinked slowly up at him, stroking his stubbled cheek. Nothing more needed to be said. It had not been a passionate frenzied kiss, but what it was
was honest. It was a promise of things to come. With a smile he rested his forehead to hers one more time. If only to hold on for a few more minutes.
“Wanna grab coffee tomorrow?”
She pulled away and smiled, “If you’re buying.”
Liv walked slowly to her car, every sound and sight muffled, as if she was walking through the haze of a dream. Each step coming as if in slow motion.
Their eyes met one last time above the car.
“You call me when you get home, alright, because if you don’t you will have the entire precinct at your doorstep in about 20 minutes.”
Without saying a word, she smiled and slid back into the driver’s side of the car. Elliot watched her slowly pull away until he could no longer see her car.
Far off in the distant, the moon and the stars followed, watching with bated breath. Rejoicing in one lost light finding its way to another, on this journey called life.

1. stay [twc – mason x sofía]
The first time was casual. She had a knack for musing her thoughts aloud, tossing her harmless opinions out for anyone who’d catch them.
She was good at starting conversations in that way – while he’d never been one for talking.
She never did it with heavy topics, though.
2. thieves in the shadows [choices – blades au – mal x zilyana]
bullets pelted the crates they were crouched behind, wood splintering in every direction. bodies were strewn across the warehouse, the unmistakable pools of blood streaking across the stone.
“raine! to your left!” immy yelled her way, barely sparing her a glance before unloading her clip, shell casings clinking against the ground.
the gun trembled in yana’s hands. she’d shot one before – practice at the gun range, glass bottles in a back alley – but never a live target.
3. if we meet again [choices – open heart au – bryce x spencer] 18+
year one
The ride from the airport to her parents’ home was long and grueling, the slushy ice pelting the windshield barely passing for snow.
It was practically sub-zero outside, a stark difference between the mid seventies weather she’d just left.
4. clandestine [twc – mason x sofía] 18+
“hey. hey wake up –”
she stirred at the greeting, but jumped when he kicked the desk. her face contorted into a grimace, the imprint of her tweed jacket on her cheek outlined in pink. “hmm?”
“you fell asleep again,” he said, plopping a bag in front of her.
5. undying [choices – blades – mal x zilyana]
Zilyana stirred, resituating herself against Mal’s bare chest, feeling his arm instinctively tighten around her shoulders. When she realized she was missing the sound of his deep breathing, accompanied with an occasional soft snore, she cracked an eye open to see his chin tipped upwards, his gaze trained on the ceiling.
6. talent show [choices – platinum – shane x dom]
There wasn’t a day that went by where she didn’t cross his mind. Even since they were kids.
He admired so much about her – her fiery spirit, her drive, her unwavering tenacity.
And he’d been in love with Dom for as long as he could remember.
7. redeemed [choices – platinum – raleigh x dom]
As soon as he stepped off stage, he was shuffled to his tour bus, Fiona on his heels. She looked like the human embodiment of rage in a grey blazer, a look in her eye that made him thankful he wasn’t the one it was directed at – or at least he hoped he wasn’t the reason she was two seconds away from a murderous rampage.
8. hidden [choices – foreign affairs – blaine x carina] 18+
Her cheek slipped out of the palm of her hand, forehead smacking the desk, nearly jumping out of her skin at the abrupt awakening.
“Ow.”
She prodded the tender spot on her face, thankful her foundation was thick.
A soft snore caught her attention – next to her, Blaine was passed out. Leaning back in his chair, his head was thrown back, arms crossed against his chest, the textbook on its face in his lap.
9. is this fate? [litg au – bobby x mc] 18+
The peroxide was cold when it hit her skin, the liquid bubbling on her knee, relentlessly stinging. She sucked in a breath through gritted teeth.
“Sorry
should be over soon,” he murmured, wiping up the stray liquid that streamed down her leg with a small rag.
The heaviness of the atmosphere between them was almost too much to bear – they’d barely spoken since he helped her onto the counter in his small office, leg propped up between his own, where he sat in his desk chair.
10. asvista cove [litg college au – bobby x elena]
Bobby’s thumb flicked the lighter repeatedly until he got a consistent flame, moving slowly from left to right over the edge of the blunt. His cheeks hollowed out as he sucked in, the tip of it an auburn ember. He pulled it out of his mouth and sucked in an even deeper breath, holding it.
When he blew out the thick cloud of smoke, he passed it to her, coughing under his breath. “Whew. Your turn.”
She followed suit, the thick smoke coating the inside of her lungs, bitter and heavy. She exhaled, the shroud smoke enveloping her view of the sealine.
11. reticent [twc – mason x sofía] 18+
She was bare.
Bare in the way that one is when they’ve been stripped down and torn apart with a trained gaze just calculating enough for them to feel seen – parts of her she didn’t know she’d hidden splayed out like withered pages of a book, dog-eared and marked up like a frequently reread novel.
One he’d reread because it was familiar, because it had fallen into his lap (he hadn’t searched for it), not so much because it was his favorite.
12. more [twc – mason x sofía] 18+
He laced his fingers through her thick hair, reveling in the way his skin looked contrasted against the midnight of her hair.
[the way i can’t post more than this bc it’s....... very nsfw right out the bat LMFAO]
13. calm before the storm [choices – open heart – bryce x spencer]
Since the moment his hands trembled amidst one of the most important surgeries of his life, Bryce was holding on by a thread.
With each half-assed joke he cracked, each wavering smile, each time he tried convincing others – including himself – that he was coping, he fell apart more and more.
The first night he went home after Spencer was quarantined, he trudged through the halls of Edenbrook, like he was dragging his legs through wet concrete. He was nearly magnetized to her bedside, not wanting to leave, but he needed to rest – he’d been awake for nearly a day and a half by the time he clocked out.
14. envy | part two of the attached series [twc – mason x sofía x felix]
He strode down the hallway, hands in his pockets to give the illusion that he didn’t give a shit, when he was most definitely on edge. His fingers flicked his lighter open and closed against the twill lining of his pockets, trying to focus on the soft clicking noise it made instead of the swarm of thoughts clouding his conscience.
He still couldn’t figure out why he cared so much.
15. comfort | part one of the attached series [twc – mason x sofía x felix]
He noticed it before she did.
Her pulse didn’t jump the same way it did the first dozen times he walked into the room. The blood didn’t rush to her cheeks, or creep up her neck, the crimson flush absent even when he tried his hardest to fluster her. And it normally took next to nothing to get her to turn into a bumbling mess.
16. out of time [choices – open heart – sienna x danny]
She sprinted down the hallway, pager still beeping erratically on her hip, the weight of the numbers enough to make her feel like she was slugging through wet concrete.
No, no, not him, please, not him, she chanted to herself, vision blurring with tears before she had the chance to let the negative possibilities set in.
17. unrequited part three [choices – open heart – bryce x spencer]
She slumped into the seat in the deserted waiting room, her joints popping as she stretched, her deep sigh echoing off of the tile. She was exhausted.
She could usually push through the worst of her shifts, but fatigue settled into her bones, a lethargy she’d never experienced entrapping her like a net, and she couldn’t fight her way out of it this time.
18. signs [choices – ride or die – logan x raquel]
“A final in sign language? Couldn’t you just have a conversation with the teacher or some shit?” Logan sat across from her on the couch, watching as her fingers bent and flexed, transfixed.
She stopped abruptly, screwing her mouth to the side in concentration. She repeated the same few moves, getting more and more frustrated with each sequence.
19. mementos [choices – ride or die – logan x raquel]
The sound of his boots slapping against the damp pavement reverberated off of the brick of the alleyways, his gasping breaths adding to the symphony that was his escape.
20. warmth [twc – mason x sofía]
“You’re going the wrong way,” Mason grunted, looking particularly stiff in her passenger seat.
“I thought we could take the scenic route,” she shrugged, flicking her high beams on as she turned off of the main road leading downtown, easing on the brakes when the tires hit the gravel.
